Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2024: Let’s Make a Difference Together
October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month—a time to remember the people and families touched by this disease. This year’s theme, “Together We Can Make a Difference,” reminds us of the power of unity and the importance of proactive health. Did you know that 1 in 7 Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer by 85? For many survivors, the fight doesn’t end with remission; they continue to face health challenges. We all know someone who has lived this reality, and it’s heartbreaking to think how different things could’ve been if they had known their risk earlier.
At AbsoluteDNA, we believe in the power of prevention. Our Inherited Cancer Panel offers a glimpse into your family’s health history, providing the opportunity for early action. Just think about the impact early detection and intervention through this DNA testing could have had on countless lives in the past.
Early detection is key, and it starts with taking care of ourselves. Here’s how to do a quick self-breast check:
- Look in the Mirror: Check for changes in size, shape, or colour, and look for visible lumps.
- Raise Your Arms: Look for nipple changes or fluid.
- Feel for Lumps (Lying Down): Use circular motions from collarbone to abdomen, covering the entire breast area.
- Feel for Lumps (Standing Up): Repeat in the shower with light pressure.
- Check Your Armpits: Feel for any unusual lumps.
- Note Changes: Contact your GP with any concerns. Regular checks could save your life.
How much do you know about your family’s health history? DNA testing can help you make informed decisions about your health, so have a chat with our team and make sure you talk to your GP about genetic testing options to better understand your risks and how preventative healthcare can work for you.
This month, let’s come together. Donate, wear pink, fundraise or join a local event to support those fighting breast cancer. Let’s raise awareness, encourage regular checks, and empower ourselves and our loved ones with the tools for early detection. For more facts and information, visit Breast Cancer Australia.
Together, we can make a difference.
