Busting Paternity Test Myths

There are several myths surrounding paternity tests, but sometimes they are just that.
Let’s debunk three of the most common misconceptions about paternity DNA testing.

1. Paternity Testing is a long process – Untrue!

Most of the time, paternity testing takes minimal time, and results arrive to you in as little as 5-7 working days. Many companies also offer an express results service, for a small additional fee, which provides results within 4 working days.

The time from sending your samples to receiving our results is generally very short. Late results are often the result of a delay in the postal system, and not the fault of the DNA company.

2. Paternity Testing can only be undertaken at a specialist clinic – Untrue!

Gone are the days of travelling to a specialist clinic for our paternity test. Advances in modern technology have brought with them the ability to order a paternity DNA test from the comfort of your own home, and have it delivered to your door.

A home DNA test kit includes everything you need to do the test at home, including precise instructions, sterile swabs, storage vials and return envelopes.

3. Paternity DNA tests cannot be used in court – Again, untrue!

Again, untrue. A court of law will accept a paternity DNA test, but you need to ensure that you undertake a legal paternity test. These samples are collected by a professional, who verifies the identity of everyone involved in the test. This differs from a home paternity test, in which you collect samples yourself for analysis. Both tests are analysed in the same way in the laboratory, but the legal paternity test costs more because of the chain of custody and extra work involved.

It is important that you choose the right test, depending on your legal circumstances.
